What to Expect After Your First Microneedling Session

From the moment you book to the days after treatment — a straightforward guide to what the experience actually looks and feels like.

One of the most common questions people ask before their first microneedling session is: what actually happens? Not the polished version, but the real one — what will my skin look like, how will it feel, and what do I need to do to look after it?

Here's an honest, practical walkthrough.

Before Your Session: Preparation Matters

The week before your appointment, there are a few things to be mindful of:

  • Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs) for at least 5–7 days before treatment. These sensitise the skin and can increase irritation
  • Don't use active vitamin C serums the day before or day of treatment
  • Stay out of direct sun in the days prior, and don't come in with a fresh tan — sunburned or recently tanned skin shouldn't be treated
  • Avoid blood thinners if possible (including aspirin and ibuprofen) 24–48 hours before, as these can increase bruising
  • Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin on the day

If you're having treatment at home in Malta with a home-visit service, your practitioner will confirm these points when you book and send you any specific preparation instructions.

During the Session

Once your practitioner arrives and you're ready to begin, here's what a typical session looks like:

Cleansing and preparation — Your skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepped. Any makeup, oil, or product residue needs to be removed before treatment.

Topical anaesthetic — A numbing cream is applied to the treatment area and left on for 20–30 minutes. This is what makes the experience manageable rather than uncomfortable.

The treatment itself — Using a professional microneedling device, your practitioner works methodically across the treatment area. Most people describe the sensation as a mild buzzing or scratching — noticeable, but not painful once the numbing has taken effect. Certain areas (around the forehead and upper lip) tend to be more sensitive.

A full face treatment typically takes 20–30 minutes. The total appointment time, including prep and aftercare guidance, is usually 60–90 minutes.

Immediately After: What You'll See

Right after treatment, your skin will be red and flushed — similar in appearance and feel to a moderate sunburn. This is completely normal and expected. There may also be some minor pinpoint bleeding, particularly in areas where deeper settings were used.

Your skin will feel warm, tight, and slightly sensitive to the touch. Some people experience mild swelling, especially around the eyes.

You won't be heading straight back out to a dinner party, but the redness typically settles significantly within 12–24 hours.

The First 48 Hours: Aftercare Essentials

This window is the most important for aftercare. Your skin has micro-channels in it — temporary openings that will close within hours, but in the meantime, you need to be careful about what goes on your face.

Do:

  • Apply a plain, gentle moisturiser — hyaluronic acid-based serums are ideal for soothing and hydrating
  • Use a high-SPF sunscreen (50+) any time you're outdoors
  • Keep your skin cool — cold compresses can help with redness and swelling
  • Stay hydrated

Avoid:

  • Makeup for at least 24 hours (48 is better)
  • Gym sessions, saunas, or anything that causes significant sweating for 24–48 hours
  • Active skincare (retinol, acids, vitamin C) for at least 5 days
  • Direct sun exposure — this is serious. UV on freshly treated skin can cause pigmentation issues
  • Swimming pools or the sea for at least 48 hours

The Recovery Timeline

Here's what to generally expect in the days that follow:

Day 1–2: Redness and sensitivity, similar to sunburn. Skin may feel tight and slightly swollen.

Day 3–4: Redness fades significantly. Some people experience mild flaking or dryness as the skin begins to shed very superficial layers. This is normal — resist the urge to pick or exfoliate.

Day 5–7: Skin starts to look clearer and more even. The "glow" that people associate with microneedling often becomes noticeable around this point.

Weeks 2–6: Collagen remodelling is underway beneath the surface, even if you can't see it yet. Gradual improvements in texture and tone continue.

Months 1–3: The full results of a single session become visible. For concerns like acne scars or deep lines, multiple sessions are usually recommended for the best outcome.

A Word on Realistic Expectations

One session of microneedling will give you a noticeable improvement in skin radiance and texture — but it won't resolve deep scars or significant skin concerns in one go. Most practitioners recommend a course of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for meaningful, lasting results.

The upside is that each session builds on the last. Results compound rather than reset, which means a committed course of treatment produces significantly better outcomes than isolated one-off sessions.

If you have questions about what to expect for your specific skin concerns, asking your practitioner before the session starts is always the right move. A good practitioner will set honest, realistic expectations — and that's exactly the kind of consultation you should expect.
